During the 19th century labor unions tried to change the work day from 12 hours to 10 hours. This led to several movements trying to improve the employees work conditions. Later the steam engine was invented and the factories were beginning to resemble the ones in England, they made few rich while making the majority miserable. Due to this there was an increase in the number of labor unions. A few organizations that were founded were the Nation Labor Union, the Knights of Labor, and the American Federation of Labor.
